A(n) (un)conditional sacrifice

Just imagine…

You know that someone very close to you is about to be mauled by a polar bear, but will come out of it alive, albeit with the possibility of losing several limbs at the very worst, and coming away with cuts and bruises at the very best. You could jump in and save them from said mauling, but for a price: you will spend the rest of your life with a cloud over your head — literally — and be rained on for all your born days. Would you save them anyway, or keep away since you know they’ll survive it?

The question seems absolutely ridiculous, and the answer is a no-brainer.

And yet you would be surprised at the answer some people give.
